I shall present some classical ideas to solve this basic problem of real algebraic geometry and discuss recent complexity reults and their mathematical background obtained with Daouda Niang Diatta, Sény Diatta, Fabrice Rouillier and Michael Sagraloff. Except Michael, all authors are members of AFRIMath, in Sénégal or in France.
